He simply made a facial nerve block (what is a motor nerve and innervate the facial muscles allowing their contraction) insead of the inferior alveolar nerve block or the mandibular nerve block (that are sansorial*) Probably the neddle penetrated too deeply and reatched the parotid gland.

Call your dentist - could be it was just numb and she/he used a special type of injection called an ID block which leaves your face numb for a longer period than you may be used to.
Your dentist needs to know if there was a problem so he/she can reassure you and so that it doesn't happen again if it was out of the ordinary.

Most likely you experienced one of the effects of what is known as "freezing".Typically used to eliminate pain by eliminating sensory transmissions to the CNS(central nervous system),this is what could be termed a peripheral effect which in most cases is common and expected after such injections. In short, unfortunately the temporary"paralysis",is a normal consequence of some "freezing" injections and is no cause for alarm.

it is a prolonged effect of the anesthesia. it is one of the complications in the application of anesthesia. Usually, the effect of anesthesia will last only for 1 or 1 1/2 hours. but for you, it lasted for a longer period. It is normal to feel numbness if anesthesia is injected for you not to feel any pain.

a local anesthetic...probably lidocaine or somethign similar. also probably has something in it that will constrict the blood vessels nearby (keeps the anesthetic where it needs to be)
