There are lots of very good and famous antivirus programs you can choose from. Try Norton, McAfee or Trend Micro PC-Cillin. I use Trend Micro & it works just fine. I don't know with the other three. Or if you can't afford that much just for an antivirus program, you night want free antivirus programs, like AVG and Avira AntiVir. They also work fine too, but the thing is they're free. Just check out these sites if you want to download some.

I recommend the AVG free edition (http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1 ), plus Windows Defender (http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx ). Both are completely free and have regular automatic updates. The first one is an antivirus, and the second one an antispyware. There are so many ad/spywares now that you also need one to keep your computer running ad-free (if you see popping ads from nowhere, you got some adware).
Hopefully Microsoft will release a full antivirus/antispyware solution soon.

All of these are ones that I personally use and all are free.
AVG Removes I-Worm/Stration · BackDoor.Generic3.GBB and .GBC · Worm/Generic.FX · Exploit.WMF
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/lng/us/tpl/v5
Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free, so there's no harm giving it a try to see if something has invaded your computer.

Keep the following points in mind
1)Make sure that your anti virus software can detect and safely remove all the virus/malicious programs/files from your machine.
2)Make sure your anti-virus consumes only less amount of memory .
3)Also make sure that you are regularly updating your virus definitions.
4)Some anti virus software's on scanning will simply show hundreds of viruses in your machine.Don't believe this ,they may be just trying to impress you by giving a fake list.

Symantec, if you're lucky you'll find the corporate edition. Uses few resources, updates every 2 or 3 days and it doesn't block any internet conections (I find that the windows firewall does that job very well :) ).
