Every time I get drunk, I forget everything that's happened. I don't understand why! Whats the reason for this and is there any way of preventing it (apart from the obvious, not drinking!)?

The answer is that alcohol is a non selective antagonist. That means that is binds to every part of the brain and blocks its normal function. What is likely to be happening in your case is that the alcohol is binding to the memory centre in your brain and blocking the formation of new memories during the period when you are drunk. There is also an illness associated with alcohol consumption where alcohol reduces the amount of Vitamin B in your system and this in turn leads to memory loss. Basically this is more likely to happen with binge drinking. In order to help prevent this you need to increase the amount of Vitamin B before you begin drinking and eat well before hand, preferably a meal including meat, fish or chicken, green veg and whole grains.
Hopefully this helps. If you are an alcoholic then you need to seek help but if you are just a typical drinking ignore most the advice given here.

It's called a blackout. If your experiecing these you should be aware of alcoholism. These are early signs of liver breakdown and are a sign to stop drinking. Does your family have a history of alcoholism? If so, stop drinking now. There is no way of stopping these while you drink, don't spend the next 20 years waking up and calling your friends to find out what you did. Eventually you'll start waking up in places your not familiar with, like a jail cell (DUI, oh yes you will drive even when you tell yourself you won't before you drink).

Your body can only metabolize about an ounce per hour. When you drink too much too fast or on an empty stomach your body can't keep up to it. Try drinking a drink per hour and eat and see if it will make a difference! Black outs are common when you drink more then your body can "get rid of". Headaches etc. also follow when you've drank too much. Good Luck!

I sometimes forget stuff. There have been a couple of nights where the lot of us dont really know what happened. That was after a very long session and lots and lots of booze though. normally remember most. Just a little hazy sometimes!! lol

I used to know the answer to that, but I keep forgetting.
Actually, it's very simple. When you drink, alcohol is destroying brain cells. That's what makes you feel "out of your mind". Some of the cells that contain your memories of the night before are killed, hence you don't remember.

Basically, just don't drink so much. Or don't drink for a while, then your tolerance will go down and it won't take as many drinks for you to get buzzed. Try to go for buzzed and not drunk.

If u totally black out, it could mean that u r a potential alcoholic. If ur not already alcoholic.
Most people remember bits and pieces of what happens when they r drunk, but alcoholics don't.
