Most carpeting is sold by the square yard so measure your areas.
Multiply width x length for total square feet.
Then divide your total square feet by 9 to determine you total sq. yards.
ie a 12x15 room would be 180 SF or 20 square yards.

Several things. First, draw a "birdseye" diagram of the areas you want to carpet. Measure the length and width of each room. Carpet runs in one direction, meaning the nap lays in one direction, so it needs to all go the same way. It comes in 12 foot and 15 foot widths as well, so you will need to figure that in. To find out your square yardage, you take your length times your width and divide by 9. Keep in mind that if your rooms are greater in width than the carpet is (12 or 15), you will need what are called "fills", extra materail. The best bet to get an estimated yardage is to figure your square footage, divide by 9, then add 5 % to that total, should be around what your actual total is. Good Luck

Measure wall to wall and multiply that.Length times width gives you the square footage.
