Having turned 40 last year, I can say that it's wonderful! Financially secure, don't have to worry about 'young people's' problems (dating etc), calmer and happier than ever before. It may be something that we say to make ourselves feel better, but when you get here, you'll find it's true.

Yes and it can end as well if your not careful. The midlife crisis exists and people can do very irrational things with their lives during this period. Such as having affairs. Totally out of character for some and for some these affairs can result in devasting consequences to both themselves, family and loved ones.
However, Forty is a wonderful time of life and should be enjoyed to the full especially as the next milestone in age is 50...then 60..need I say more. Though I am not saying that life as you know it will come to an end when you reach these other milestones, it's just that mother nature can be cruel so make the most of your time now not just forty something.

Speaking as a 40 year old, it doesn't really seem much different to being 39!
Given the choice, I think I'd raher be 21 again though, although keeping the knowledge I have now.

Maybe it does, my mates in their 40s seem happier than most of my mates in their 30s.

That is AARP Crapola!!
I would not want to be under eighteen either.
