Nah - "golf" is derived from older languages, in this case the languages are medieval Dutch & old Scots.

The medieval Dutch word "kolf" or "kolve" menat "club" It is believed that this word passed on to the Scots whose old Scots dialect transformed the word into "golve" "gowl" or "gouf" The word "golf" emerged around the 16th Century.

I play occasionally, and I have heard the term, but I would guess that it is the result of a few to many at the 19th rather than having any basis in reality.

Isn't there a painting of Mary Queen of Scots playing Golf? This was from about the time it started being played.
