I think that heredity is an important factor. The next major factor would be your lifestyle. There was a research done on a small fishing village in Japan where the average resident lives up to the 90's, and they concluded that the steady diet of low fat fish and seaweed help in extending their lives.
I agree with you, being able to see a new day everyday is a blessing and I hope I can live long enough to see all my grandchildren getting married. My grandma (she's 75) now has 13 great grandchildren, man is she lucky!

It depends on you and your body type. Some people can eat and live healthy their whole lives and still die young. Vegans, health nuts, workout freaks all die at the same level as most. On the other hand I have see a smoker that only eats bacon grease live to 102 so whats the secret. I'll tell you what my great Aunt Alice said. She agrued with a 76 year old that said she was getting to old. My Aunt Alice told her to shut up "IF YOUR OLD THAT MAKES ME OLDER"
The key is not to live longer but live a better quality life :)

My great-grandfather lived to be 102. He farmed until well in his 80s and had ham and eggs every day for breakfast. He was already middle-aged during the Depression (which might have been pretty stressful), but was very self-sufficient. He never smoked, rarely drank, and enjoyed the attentions of a LARGE family. He was healthy (with only a couple of loose screws, lol) until the day he died of a stroke. It could be hereditary---his sister is currently 103. I don't know. If you figure out the answer let me know. If it's the stress thing, then I'm going to die in a couple of years, lol.

Both my parents had a grandfather who died after the age of 100 but all their children (except one) died before their 80th birthday. My two great-grandfathers shared quite a few similarities:
Both lived in a rural area, both were rather poor and led simple even sober lives (especially in regard to food). Neither of them smoked, but both enjoyed the occasional drink and both of them were optimists by nature and clearly enjoyed life. Both of them led very active lives (both physical and mental) until the very end.
By the way, I sincerely doubt if they even knew what yoga meant...
My two great-grandfathers produced 2 and 9 children but all of them (except my gran) died before the age of 80. They inherited the genes of their fathers but they lived rather stressfull lives, were workaholics, smoked a lot and quite a few of them suffered mental problems (depression, burn-out, etc.). Most of them died in their seventies, a few even earlier.
So genetics maybe one cause for old age but an active lifestyle and feeling happy about yourself and the world around you is much more important.
So enjoy life and concentrate on the good things.

don't drink alcoholic beverages, eat healthy food and vegetable, avoid oily foods, avoid eating junk food, don't smoke, don't do drugs, always drink plenty of water, eats fruits, don't always drink softdrinks( it sounds kind of hard right...i didn't actually mean to do it for the rest of your life...just regulate it...for example...drink alcoholic beverages at least 1 a month or during special occasions)
don't eat too much of anything...water is the only thing that you can stuff yourself with without destroying your body( got it from my dad)
