Tapestry
Carole King
(Tapestry)

My life has been a tapestry of rich and royal hue
An everlasting vision of the everchanging view
A wondrous woven magic in bits of blue and gold
A tapestry to feel and see, impossible to hold
Once amid the soft silver sadness in the sky
There came a man of fortune, a drifter passing by
He wore a torn and tattered cloth around his leathered hide
And a coat of many colors, yellow-green on either side
He moved with some uncertainty, as if he didn't know
Just what he was there for, or where he ought to go
Once he reached for something golden hanging from a tree
And his hand came down empty
Soon within my tapestry along the rutted road
He sat down on a river rock and turned into a toad
It seemed that he had fallen into someone's wicked spell
And I wept to see him suffer, though I didn't know him well
As I watched in sorrow, there suddenly appeared
A figure gray and ghostly beneath a flowing beard
In times of deepest darkness I've seen him dressed in black
Now my tapestry's unravelling, he's come to take me back
He's come to take me back

I first heard this song in 1971 and repeatedly tried to figure out the meaning. The dreamy lyrics were strangely evocative, but what they were supposed to be saying, I couldn't really grasp.

Having said that, I've always thought the first four lines were wonderful on their own. These lines always remind me of my own life and the wonder and meaning of it all, as well as the uncertain yet amazing journeys we all experience. Those first lines sent chills down my spine when I first heard them

There is a two-fold beauty one experiences from listening to Tapestry today. The first is somewhat nostalgic, listening to beautiful words set perfectly to music. The second is the pleasure anyone, no matter their age, can get from listening to the combination of lyrics and music that is Tapestry.

That's a pretty cool song. Upon first reading it, I think that the man dressed in the coat of many colors is man b4 the fall. Him reaching for the apple from a literal sense is taking the apple from Eve in the garden and eating it.
From a figurative point of view, however, i think that him reaching for the apple and coming back w nothing symbolizes that man didn't get what he had hoped for. Rather than becoming like God, man fell down and became worst than he was. A toad in this case.
I think the ghostly figure that appeared is the Holy Spirit, who was sent out to all Christians after Christ death, and who is always with us.
Also, i think the tapestry represents time. So when it says at the end: "Now my tapestry's unravelling, he's come to take me back He's come to take me back" I think this refers to the end of days and Christs return.
Well, I hope you found my interpretation enlightening. God Bless, Ryan

The song has (if you will permit me) rich tapestry, and gorgeous texture.

That was pretty contrived and derivative when it was released.
