How do you convince them they're worthy of love and respect and that you won't walk away from them and that you really love them especially when the guy has got everything in the world going for him.

You really can't convince them of anything!! They have to find their own worthiness in themselves. Probably through years of self motivated therapy.
I can sympathize with you though. I was involved with a man who was a product of terrible parents. He's nearly 40 years old now and he still has not dealt with it!!
We were young and passionately in love but I couldn't bring myself to stay with him once he started emotionally and physically abusing me!
Two days after I broke it off I found out I was pregnant!
I decided that day that there was no way I could let this man possibly pass on the terrible cycle of abuse to our child.
20 years later I have a wonderful daughter who knows the man who is her biological father. Luckily for her she understands the significance of having limited visitations with him. I think if she saw him a total of 1 year collectively. He never paid a dime of child support and the time she did spend with him was due in large part at the request of her fathers Grandmother and Aunt who were the only decent people in this man's family. They went out of their way to make her feel special and wanted.
I don't know how people stay with someone who has been so scarred! I couldn't do it! I really tried to show him when we were together that you can love someone without pain. But he couldn't get past it .
He had everything going for him too. Sadly some people just can't see until it's too late!
Good luck!

All I can say is just take it slow and by being there for him,if he truely is the right guy then he will eventually come around...another thing I don't know if yall are religious but I have found that prayer helps a lot...just try to keep the communication open and be comforting. This will show to him eventually that what you say and show is true and from the heart.

with things like that, there's really nothing you can say, but you can connect, show them you trust them, show them you care, take this persons hand, if they will let you, becasue they feel dirty, and worthless, and words become fake and hollow, buy them a gift or something, remember their birthday, think of them..be there for them, don't try and talk to them about it unless they mention it first.
