I had huge problems breast feeding my daughter I tried for 3 weeks with one inverted nipple I used a nipple shield on that breast and fed normally on the other. I ended uping the nipple shield on both because my breasts were too full and it was the most stressful experience of my life. I want to breast feed my second child desperately. has anyone else experienced this and is it possible to breast feed at all with this problem?

You should start going to La Leche League before the baby comes if you can. You'll build a support group of other nursing moms and get to know the Leader. Then you'll be more comfortable calling her for help post-partum if you need it.

Consider wearing breast shells in your bra between feedings to draw out the nipple instead of fussing with the nipple shields. You can also pump just a little before feedings to draw out the nipple and make latching easier.

Nursing frequently will help to prevent the engorgement. Engorgement is a sign that either you have too much milk (common early on because your body doesn't know if you had triplets! LOL!) or not nursing frequently enough. Early on you need to be nursing AT LEAST every 2 hours, from the start of one feeding to the start of the next. Cabbage leaves can be used to treat engorgement. Also, apply cold between feedings for the swelling and HEAT prior to feedings to soften up the breasts and get things flowing.

Hope this helps!

I heard that if you use the nipple shield for a while your nipple will eventually stay out and because of the baby suckling. It is also okay to only feed on one breast the whole time you nurse. Your body will know and provide enough nutrition on that side only. YES it is I worked on the L&D floor & saw woman w/ both nipples inverted succesfully breast feed. Ask your OB or call the hospital where you will deliver & ask to speak with a lactation consultant they will have you come in a few times & show you techniques as well as products you can also ask that they come in your room right after delivery to help, they will come in at every feeding if you need them and witht their help by the time you leave the hospital you should be a old pro!

Of course you can! Try to get some help from a lactation consultant or a La Leche League leader. Here are some links that might help, too:
