My mother was a small child in Germany during WWll when the British planes bombed her city, killed most of her family, and left her homeless and poverty stricken. Now shes 70 and it still makes her sad to think about it, how she grew up...hungry, cold and poor.

I dont care what you people think. War hurts children. Bombing buildings is stupid. Its not like WW1 or prior where soilders lined up to fight soilders....that I can understand...but todays wars kills more civilians than anything. Whats to be proud of. I will never agree

Soldiers and Sailors are proud of their service to country an rightly so. They are NOT always proud of the things that service sometimes unfortunately requires.

I had the privilege of interviewing a man who was a bombardier on a B-29 during WWII. He flew from Iwo Jima on bombing missions over mainland Japan. He spoke to me of things he has never discussed with his family because of the pain he still carries today. Now keep in mind that this is one tough guy, but as he unfolded his experiences he began to cry. He is all too aware of the havoc that they were wreaking on the ground. He knew the hell that those people were experiencing and he is NOT proud of it.

This happened over 60 years ago and he still carries the pain as if it were yesterday. War is HELL and most of the "casualties" survive the combat.

What he is proud of is that the cities experiencing this HELL were not named San Francisco, New York or anything in between.

Thank God for our Vets!!

Lady, it's not a matter of being proud of killing other human beings. It is a matter of having the courage to step forward, put on the uniform, raise your right hand and swear to protect the United States against all enemies foreign and domestic, and if need be put yourself in harm's way and lay down your life if that is what is required in order to keep this country alive. It is easy for the general public to question such an attitude, but every day I wake up in peace and tranquility in this country, I thank god for everyone who is serving or has served the United States.

he killed thousands of innocent women, men, children and Africans. The reason people are proud of having served is because people like Hitler would have annihilated everybody on the planet, because of their race or ethnicity. He was a monster and it is unfortunate that your mother had to grow up that way. Hilter made a choice and was still fuming over WWI.

The Russians fought him, France, Poland, Slovakian Republic, England and all of Europe fought him. If the fruitcakes in Iraq and Iran have their way, the same will begin to occur all over again.

As a combat veteran I am proud that when asked I served...I didn't start the war it was my lot to have to leave home and fight in it..and believe me at the time the mid 60's it was easy to avoid..in combat it comes down to him or me and when push comes to shove I will ALWAYS choose him to die for his cause...whether or not I believe in "our cause" which in combat is not a part of the equation ..survival is all any soldier is really concerned about...and the survival of his buddies..fellow soldiers..so yes I am VERY PROUD of my having done my job and serving as called... by the way I was shot during the TET offensive of Jan and Feb. 1968...

As to your mother think about the carpet bombing of London and how many civilians the Germans killed. How about the horrible killing of Jews, Blacks, and POW's? Not that the allies during WW2 were innocent of killing POW's. The Germans were more bold in how they did it. As for me being an Infantrymen I have no remorse of what I have done. That is between me and GOD.

I will just say that you have much to learn.
I think you need to be educated and asking a Veteran is your best chance at getting to the real answer.
Defending your country and doing a job most people couldn't and wouldn't do is what they are proud of. Leaving a family, a job, and everything we were working for to go defend our nation and do the job we were asked to do is what makes us proud.
I think you are in denial of your own ignorance of what these veterans are all about - you have it all wrong in my opinion.

It's actually crazy. I lived in Germany for years. When I went to Berlin I met a woman who explained how she was stuck on the West Side of the wall during the Cold War. She thanked me and my father for everything we'd done for her. She also recalled a time when planes flew over and she got chocolate in little packages--the Air Force would drop chocolate for the children back then.

It's funny how stories get twisted. American soldiers are doing their jobs. War is not fun. Dictators are not fun. God forbid, Hitler was still around!

While there are kids who ultimately are victims in war--our troops try to give back for these kids. Have you seen the fund for school supplies through the USO?

What really gets me is my husband missed my son's birth for people like you. Be grateful of your freedom of speech. People like him fight for it every day. If you were in Iraq about five years ago you'd probably be killed.

We are proud because we care enough for our country and the people that we volunteer to defend your freedom. No we are not in denial, you would never understand what we went through and the things we have to deal with. So for someone to just think that we are nothing but human killer are just plain crazy. But its ok cause that's your opinion and we did fight for you to be able to have that freedom of speech.

Are you assuming they killed people? Those that brag about killing others, I would run like the wind from.

My father, son, & grandson are proud of their service, as are many others. They did what many wouldn't, survived it, learned from it, grew from it. They found things within themselves they wouldn't know were there without the experience. I think you my be a little too prejudicial here.

i can't belive i even have to anwser this question; did they teach you anything in school? we're proud to defend our country and you should be proud we defended your country and you're not working in a sweatshop making 10 cents a day. i'm sure none of them are proud they killed another human but if that had not been done this country would be ran like communist north korea. i'm sorry that had to happen to your grandmother but you have to look at the bigger picture. hilter was trying to destroy a whole race of people..
