not bad, some people do that, however its obviously getting dirty and smelly - you should at least condition more often to keep your scalp moisturized.. you dont want to develop dandruff.
if you really dont want to wash your hair, try a dry shampoo, or just put some perfume in it to mask the obvious smell.

Washing once a week is not enough to keep the scalp clean and healthy for most people, esp. if you are male, active and young. Shampoo will dry your hair more but you can replace that moisture with a conditioner or "leave in" conditioner or a styling gel. It may take a bit of experimenting to get the right one. Try a shampoo for "color treated hair", or a baby shampoo, they are milder and don't strip the hair of all oils, make sure you massage the scalp. You can also put your shampoo in a bottle with a narrow top and apply the shampoo to your scalp, massage the scalp and then just let it rinse through your hair.
If your hair smells sweaty, you are going too long between washing. Better puffy hair than clogged hair follicles, eh?
When my hair is acting too fluffy I use a homemade combo of sweet almond oil/light olive oil and a few drops of rosemary and Clary sage. Rosemary essential oil is great for the scalp and smells good. Use just a bit, it can irritate if you use too much. Keep essential oils out of your eyes and off the furniture. I rub some on my hands and run them through my hair or I treat my hair ad scalp with it at night and then wash in the morning.

It doesn't hurt to wash your hair w/ shampoo once a week... in fact, my father-in-law (the doctor) always insists on it... he hates that I wash and shower every day... anyway, the reason your hair smells is because you probably do activities that make your body/ and or scalp sweat... even if you don't do those things, pollutants in the air like dust, smog, etc... can make your hair and thus your scalp smelly. Washing it too often strips your scalp and strands of much needed natural moisture and healthy oils. The best thing to do is either...

- wash it with a mild soap, like children's shampoo a bit more often

- DON'T wet it if you're not gonna use shampoo; use a shower cap and find a light serum, hair scent, or perfume that won't interfere w/ your hair chemistry... think of it this way: if you only wet your hair and don't wash it, it's like wetting dirty clothes and drying it without ever using soap... not so fresh eh?

-Or... get one of those new hair powders... they freshen up your hair by soaking up excess scalp oils. You don't have to wash as often, and they are made to match your hair color so the powder doesn't make your hair look like it's been in a bakery... yu just powder, brush it out and voila!!!

GOOD LUCK!!!

I recommend starting off with your shampoo/conditioner. You can't use a cheap brand. Trust me. You'll want to go with Biosilk, Paul Mitchell Smoothing (Super Skinny), etc. My clients have had lots of success with Biosilk (#1 satisfaction) and Paul Mitchell as shampoos and conditioners to help smooth out hair. I also recommend a leave-in conditioner such as Matrix - Biolage Smoothing Balm. This will get your hair naturally smoother without flat ironing it. Wash/condition once every 3 days. I know these products are expensive compared to the non-salon quality brands but it's worth it! If you've been using cheap shampoos/conditioners, you'll see a huge difference once you switch!

When you take showers, avoid rinsing your hair. You need those natural oils to keep your hair down and smooth. Rinsing also makes it dry so keep that in mind. If you need something to freshen your hair, serums do work to some extent.

I don't know about the stuff to put in hair to make it not smell but isn't conditioner or shampoo, but I *do* know that washing your hair only once a week isn't bad if that's all it needs. not to be offensive but maybe your hair smells because you do need to wash it more? My mom washed her hair only 3 times a week because her hair was coarse and dry, me I need to wash it every other day because it's oily and fine.

Try dry shampoo in between washings. There is a drugstore brand called Pssssssst. There are some other, more expensive brands whose names I don't know, but I know Sephora carries at least one, and you can always Google! I have fine hair, which tends to get oily at the scalp if I don't wash it every day, but dry and static-y at the ends if I do wash every day. So I find that dry shampoo can be very helpful.

You could try brushing baby powder through your hair, to absorb the oil, which might be making it smell. There's nothing inherently WRONG with only shampooing once a week, it's just that most people view that as, well, dirty. I only do mine twice a week, even though I shower every day, because it doen't NEED it every day. (Besides, I would wind up drying up every body of water on the planet if I did everyday!)
Bottomline: don't worry about it. If someone complains...tell them to go look in the mirror. then go grab the baby powder so they won't be bugging you again.

First of all it's not bad to only wash your hair once a week. For people of color, it's preferred because we will loose our natural oils from our hair, if we shampooed more than once a week. To hide the odor, fine a hair creme that smells great and apply it to your hair.

No, i purely wash my hair two times or thrice each week. I try this because of the fact washing my hair conventional makes it very mushy and skinny and that makes it annoying to artwork with. additionally washing your hair conventional takes out the organic supplementations that your hair has. in case you think of washing it as quickly as each week isn't good, flow to 2 times each week.

If it stinks, wash it. Shampoo doesn't hurt your hair any more than washing your underarms does. Try a conditioner that you can leave on after use. That may flatten your poofy hair somewhat.
