Jesus died on the cross on Friday the 14th day of Nisan, the first month of the Jewish calendar, or the Passover day, thus fulfilling the prophecy that He will die as the Lamb of God which carried the sins of the earth as a sacrifice. The following day, the 15th day of Nisan was the festival of the Unleavened Bread symbolizing the death of Jesus who was sinless, thus unleavened, and also the fact that He was going to rest in the grave that day, which is the seventh day Sabbath, also called the rest day, and the High Sabbath, because it had a double significances, besides an ordinary 7th day Sabbath, it was also a shadow Sabbath or the Unleavened Bread festival Sabbath. He was resurrected the following morning which was Sunday, or the first day of the week. That resurrection day was the 16th day of Nisan, which was the First Fruit Festival, symbolizing the resurrection of Jesus assuring that there will be a harvest at the end of the world. During the ascension of Jesus He took only a few saints who were resurrected on Friday when there was an earthquake which opened their graves. Later at the end of the earth, which is referred to as the Harvest, all the saints who are saved by Him will be resurrected and taken together to heaven.

Based on the Biblical accounts, Jesus died on Friday afternoon around 3:00 p.m. [the ninth hour of the day] and had to be buried the same day AND before dusk --since it was going to be the Sabbath/Passover by then and no Jew was allowed to do any kind of work at all.

He then laid buried in His tomb all of Sabbath Day/Passover until the early dawn of Sunday, the first day of the week, when He rose from the dead on His Resurrection...

Many significant and symbolic meanings are attached to the timing of all these occurences but it will require quite a lengthy explanation for each one here now.

As an aside, there exists a common misconception among Bible students and scholars that there HAD TO BE A GAP of "3-days-and-3-nights" BETWEEN His death and His Resurrection. Apparently, this is in an attempt to align it with the experience that Jonah had when he was swallowed by a giant fish.

When, in truth, they miss the basic point entirely that "...HE ROSE ON THE THIRD DAY", as it is written. And NOT AFTER the third day, see??

Peace be with you.

It was Wednesday.

Matthew 12:40
for as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the whale; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

Three days and three nights is 72 hours, you can't get 72 hours between friday afternoon and sunday morning.

Traditionally, it is believed He died on Friday. Some sincere people, however, think it was on Thursday. But whichever day it was, He paid the penalty for our sins and on the third day, however reckoned, He rose from the dead, victorious over sin and death, so that all who place their faith in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.

I will tell you this much...It was NOT on "good Friday"...You CANNOT fit 3 days and 3 nights into Friday evening to "easter" Sunday morning! IMPOSSIBLE! So YOU do the math...It will NEVER make sense...Then again, neither does rising on the morning of "easter"(ancient word for "Astarte"--Female Fertility Goddess)and facing toward the sun!...An ancient pagan custom of worshiping the SUN!
