I know what fundamental means when referring to most things -- it means basic (as in fundamental needs, basic needs). When referred to in a religious sense, it is decribing a group who takes the Bible literally. I believe "strict adherence" is often used in connection with fundamentalism.
Have I misused it?

Fundamental is a good word that has been demonized by the media. The media is scared of "fundamentalists" because they don't need the media. It's basically going back to the basics... grassroots efforts to re-discover the original intentions and understandings of a certain idea, religion or belief system. In reality, fundamental is the basic building blocks of understanding. It's actually a very good thing. I don't understand why the media is so petrified of it except that it threatens their own existence perhaps??

I have seen what you have written if anyone is a Fundamentalist on YA its you.
anyone that would atomaticly disscredit a religion and call it evil (much less any religion that is not yours) is a fundamentalist
anyone that wants to change a country so its laws mirror there theology is a fundamentalist.
Like I said you should take it as a complement otherwise why would you do it? Then again I have no shame in saying that I can be a Fundamentalist in the exact oposite direction

Pft! Grand example! LOL! How do you know Jesus wasn't an imitation of someone prior. He had to learn from someone. I think the real mistake of modern Christianity is the continual segregation of Christianity from 'humanity'. Take the 'Christ' out of Christianity and you have a perfect religion. No hocus pocus. No mythical human figure, just a god and a whole lot of nice people making the world a better place. Peace.

what I want to know is why they always assume it has to be attached to the word Christian--there are fundamentalists in every religion--although you are right--it's most often used in place of fanatic, even though the definitions are completely different

Basic ... strict adherence? All the "frills" stripped away and simply getting down to the basics of the matter.
That's how I view the term.
