Only nescessary for takeoff and landing to see the ground, they actually point down a little to hit the ground. If your using them during cruise, it's usually for avoidance and is an unnescessary draw on your power source.

That's known as the landing light and all aircraft have them from Boeing to the Cessna 152. This used during taxing as well as on landing so the can get a clear view of the runway.

Most aircraft have landing lights that are used to help the pilot see if their are any obstructions on the runway, also for increased visibility to others. Also taxi lights, which are obviously used for taxiing, are equipped on most aircraft, and strobe and nav lights so other aircraft can see the aircraft and in which direction it is flying by interpreting the colors of the lights (red on left wing, green on right, and white on tail.).

Aircraft not only use landing lights during the night time, but during the whole day, it is regulation by the FAA to turn on landing lights when entering the runway for takeoff, or turning them off after leaving the runway after landing

Any time you see an aircraft with landing lights on, and they are neither taking off or landing, it is so that they can be seen by other aircraft. Once off the ground you cannot tell if the lights are on unless they are reflected off dust or clouds in the air.

Aircraft have landing lights, taxi lights, and some have recognition lights. Landing and taxi lights have obvious uses there are used to see the runway and the taxi way. They are not absolutely necessary, most pilots have trained to land without landing lights, that is why there are so many lights on the runways and why they are different colors, to tell where you are. The recognition lights are used in flight to increase their visibility to other pilots in the air. They also add to the lighting on the ground.

because for approaching aircraft, the lights are two different colors to tell left and right. so other aircraft can tell what direction the aircraft is coming from

the same reason any other vehicle uses front lights...to see...even though they use instruments to tell how close they are to something, they are still supposed to look out for other aircraft. also they need it to land and take off.

Anti-Collision!

Aircraft have lights in the front at night to see other planes moving in the sky. When flying at various altitudes, it is difficult to tell wether you are on a collision course with another jet (of course, that is what ATC is supposed to help you do).

Mostly to make themselves obvious -- to other aircraft, and to control towers. Airplanes are equipped with landing and taxi lights, which are useful but not essential; one can land an airplane (on a lighted runway) without using lights. (I have done so as an exercise.)
