I definitely try to focus on the good "What a sweetie!" or "Who do you think he/she looks like?" Always smile (save the cringing for when they leave) and talk the 'baby-talk' annoying talk.
I also learned the hard way not to assume that a baby is a boy or a girl until it's said. . .A woman I went through Lamaze with was shopping with her newborn. The baby was in a dark blue t-shirt and blue and white sports socks. The carrier was blue. This was their first child, so I just KNEW it was a boy with all that blue! "Oh, what a sweet little boy ~ congratulations!" It was mid-August, but you could feel the ice shooting from her eyes as she coldly announced "SHE is a GIRL." oops. Meanwhile, our first daughter was in pinks and ribbons and ruffles and everything girl ~ there was NO question! I just left. What else could I do?

"Well. . .let's just hope that you grow up to have a great personality. You know what they say, 'It's the inside that counts!'. . .Okay, I'll see you guys later. Bye! Good luck!" - [all the while hopeful that the parents don't detect the fakeness in the big smile put on]
