I fly a lot (several times a month), and I've ALWAYS found that the airlines directly will offer the cheapest prices. I usually check sites such as orbitz and expedia, to see which airline has the cheapest flights, and then I go to that airline's website directly and pick the same flights. Usually the price is the same, but minus the $5 (or more) "booking fee" that those websites charge. Basically, the airlines encourage you to book directly through their website and most will now guarantee that the cheapest fares are on their websites. Also, most of the "low-fare" carriers - i.e., Southwest Airlines or JetBlue, ONLY sell tickets through themselves so you have to go through their websites. Although, I've often found that they don't have the cheapest flights anyway. (I'm flying to Florida next week and when I got my ticket, USAirways was a couple hundred dollars cheaper than JetBlue.) Anyway, it pays to shop around but like I said, almost always the best option is to go through the airline directly.
