Is true/ideal love so transient and irrational that divorce is a natural consequence of being true to your own heart? Or is it supposed to last, through commitment and selflessness?

When people talk about marraige - love is something to work out despite difficulties...
When people talk about dating - love is mystic, spontaneous, irresistable. With so many answers swinging one way - (except for one, thanks BTW) we are left with another dilema - even if you so carefully pick a person, how can you ensure they pick you? Or is that the obvious result of picking the right person?

True love shouldn't be transient but progressive and developing to a higher level. It becomes irrational when you put things in a box and let idealism dictate the relationship. True love is about being able to go through all the changes and accept those changes. If love is transient, then there is no point of getting into a marriage.

Design your relationship to last by way of strong commitment and selflessness as you have mentioned.

It's supposed to last, through commitment, selflessness, and using your brain to pick the right spouse in the first place. That seems to be the part people mess up the most often. They fall for someone and ignore all the stuff that is a deal-breaker, then wonder why on earth it all fell apart later.

Real, true love has the strength to get you through the tough times and keep you together. But you only get that love when you deliberately choose the right person.

You have asked the timeless question nobody can realy figure out.

If you want examples of true love, then I can think of one that sticks out.

A prince from India decided to build the Taj Mahal to profess his love for one of his wives.

He must have had as many as twenty wives, but that one wife stood head and shoulders above the rest, so he built that for the world to see.

In today's female dominated world, divorce became routine when somebody gets an inclination to enrich a divorce attorney.

The many divorces tell me we now live in a world virtually empty of love...we are all individuals and tend to expect too much of mates...and marriage became more of a business partnership than a reflection of true love.

Too bad, because love is not of material things.

wow first time i've seen a serious question posted here. well it should last through your lifetime and divorce should not be the solution to any arguments but only understanding your partner would resolve your dilemma.
