Trying to become a police officer but i'm not sure how to respond to the drug questions. I plan on admitting that i have smoked marijuana a few times in the past mainly in high school but I have also tried cocaine a couple times all before when I was 19. I'm now almost 23 and havent had anything to do with drugs since then but I have a feeling admititng that I have tried cocaine a handful of times will automatically disqualify me but at the same time I dont want to lie or falsify my application. Being a cop is definetly what I want to do with my life and I dont want the mistakes of my college years to stop me from doing this so should I be honest and hope they respect that or try to get around it?

As much as I respect the profession and try to be honest at all times, I have to tell you that most agencies will automatically disqualify you for any "hard" drug usage after age 18. Oddly enough, in todays age, if you deny ever having used marijuana, they will more than likely not believe you and will search harder to try to find deceit. The problem is this, experimenting with drugs would disqualify SO MANY GOOD applicants. Im not so sure they shouldnt change the rules. But they havent. So, if you want to be a cop, I would have to advise you to omit ever having tried hard drugs. If they believe you have, they will try to fool you into admitting you have after having said you havent. So, "just say no" and STICK TO THAT NO MATTER WHAT!!! And from now on, ALWAYS say NO to drugs and alcohol!! Be careful with your references because they will talk to people you havent seen or heard from in years that may have done coke with you. You then have to lie again and say those people are lieing!!

Honesty is the best approach. Here, I know part of the testing process is a polygraph test. It's better to tell the truth about the ugly past than to get caught in a lie - cuz the lie WILL disqualify you! Just make sure that you point out that it was something that you haven't done in a long time, and that you have no interest in EVER doing again. Good luck!

Go with your gut on this one and tell the truth. Make it clear that you are NOT going to do this again. If you are really supposed to be a police officer, than this will not stand in your way. But if you lie, then that is making another poor choice, which can only lead to more trouble. You can use this situation as a lesson learned for others before they make the same choices that you did. Thank you for considering being a public servant!!

It probably depends on the police department. But, I don't think many police departments would hire you anytime soon due to your use of cocaine and Ecstasy. I know of some departments that wouldn't ever hire you if you've used Ecstasy. Some departments would consider you in several years. Go to college, and get your degree. Get at least a 4 year degree with a high grade point average. You should pass a polygraph test if you tell the truth.

You should be totally honest. A polygraph test may be part of future tests, so you will probably get caught in your lie.

This is exactly why I still give juveniles I arrest the, "you better think about what you do now, cause it WILL affect your future", speech. I know it usually goes in one ear and out the other, but I gotta try.

I wouldn't risk lying and trying to beat the polygraph test. Just be truthful and emphasize the infrequent and casual use and the lenth of time since using.

If you are up front on the application, you have a chance of becoming a police recruit, but if you lie, and the truth surfaces, then you will be booted out in disgrace.
