I have a bassett/lab mix. He's four years old and I have never had a dog with this much gas. He belches and farts constantly and it smells like he is pooping on himself. The lady I got him from said if I fed him Kirkland chicken puppy food, he wouldn't have this problem. She was wrong! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Feed him a kibble with no corn, soy or beet pulp..If he still has any gas, add a spoon of plain yogurt to his kibble to aid digestion.

Gas can be deadly to dogs, as it causes bloat. You really need to speak with your vet about the situation, and in the meantime, you can safely give your dog a Gas-x, but speak to the vet FIRST about how much to give her. It could save her life.

You need to buy him a breed specific dog food, or you can try an all natural organic dog food with no fillers. Gas is caused from food intolerance.

It's probably because you're not feeding him a "supreme nutrition" dog food. What that means is that he's not getting the nutrition that he needs, and as a result he's got gas. Does he eat his poop too? That's another sign that he needs something else.

You know how you get gas when you eat bad foods... well that's just what's going on with him.

DO NOT feed him Kirkland food. I'm sure it has all kids of fillers and additives that he doesn't need! Go to your local Petco and buy him a good dog food. Try something like Nutro or Solid Gold. Both are good dog foods and should help his little problem. Make sure you get the food that is most appropriate for him though!

Also, if he is four years old, he does NOT need to be eating a puppy food. All that is going to do is make him fat, because of the amount of protein that is in puppy food to help them grow.

Good Luck!

Giving dogs scraps can cause this problem, among other things.
There are charcoal-type dog biscuits that greatly reduce the gas.

Purina has a sensitive system dog food for dogs what have problems digesting. I gave some to my dog when I thought she was having some problems, I mixed it in with her Iams, seems to have helped. Good luck.

My dog is usually fine until I feed him certain canned food. My advice would be to change his food, and not offer a variety of different types of foods. Find one that he likes and causes no excess gas and stick with it. For variety, give him a treat for doing something good.

Boy can I relate to this. When we adopted our Springer Spaniel we had to leave the house every time he umm, passed gas. I immediately took him off the food his prior owners had him on and switched to "purina 1, lamb and rice" problem solved. I have been feeding my dogs this brand for over 15 years without a problem. You can get the best prices for it a Target.

My dog had the same problem, and he's nearly the same age as your dog.
I tried several brands of dog food 'supposedly to help this problem', and none of them worked.
A co-worker told me to try Purina premium brand, i'm glad I did
because 'finally' this one worked.
If it doesn't work for you then I would take him to your vet as he could have digestive problems and need a special diet.
another thing you should consider is, Labs are often more gassy than most dogs.

I see Chetco answered here. I respect Chetco's answers, and i recommend what was written. Many types of foods cause gas, remember beans beans are good for the heart beans beans they make you.... check whats in your dog food and make changes accordingly.

I understand your pain. We have a german shorthair and I sometimes wonder if the paint is going to peel! Anyway, we are using a product called smog remedy. I don't have the bottle in front of me, but we bought it at http://designerdogavenue.com/shop/dog_smog_remedy.asp

Anyway we've found it helps,

Good Luck!
