Can you give me some ideas of sites, and what they are like? How I would go about registering for them?
I really need to brush up my skills in talking to people, because I get all tongue tied and generally clam up before I can make a fool of myself.

Hmmm . . . I've never chatted extensively. I certainly haven't met people through it. I use instant messenging to communicate with people I know already, but I never used it to communicate with anyone I never met before.
I think you should learn to talk to people in person. If clamming up is a problem for you, you can ask them questions. But the only way you can get over shyness is to talk to people. I suggest you go to coffee shops or similar establishments to learn. Or alternatively, join a few clubs and attend various events. If you're religious, start going to church.

I wouldn't put much stock in those sites, because it seems like there aren't many people who fit the type of person I'm looking for on them. I would consider them as a last resort. But you just might get lucky. Be careful, in any case.

You don't need a messenger for chatway, and it's easy to chat, you can just go to the site and pick a room to go in. yahoo has a chat services, download their free tool chat and use your email add and password to sign inn, it has also free webcam and voice services
