A friend's 14 year old was arrested over the weekend for residential burglary and because there was a gun in the car (scary thought, they were all young teens) he and the other boy in the front seat were charged with possession of a handgun as well.
Does anybody know what they normally do to teens in that situation?
He has no priors.

That would depend on whether or not he is tried as an adult. At 14 it can go either way; especially since a gun was involved.
I would think that he is at least looking at some time in detention and a lengthy probation period.

It depends, I would bet if the situation is EXACTLY as you say, he WILL not be charged as an adult. AS a matter of fact, in my county and state, that offense does not qualify for being tried as an adult, otherwise known as, "direct filing." 14 year olds tried as adults will still do juvenile time anyway. They can not be housed with adults. Once they are 16, then off to prison they go. My guess is local time (no youth prison) in a detnetion hall or camp and probation.

they send criminals to jail. if the criminal pleads guilty, then they are a little lineant since a guilty plea saves taxpayers' money and public servants' time.
