then started to load the xp over it. it was just about to load windows when it stopped and said ( cannot copy bootvid.dll) I have no idea what that means or what to do next. I thought that by having two new copys of 98 and xp, I would not have this kind of problem. Can anyone out there help me out? I need to get xp loaded and i need 98 on there because i only have the upgrade of xp.

Since you don't have anything worthwhile on there, wipe the entire hard drive clean and start over. But this time, don't install Windows 98! You don't need to. Instead, run the XP installation disc. At some point during the installation process, XP will tell you that you need to insert the Windows 98 CD so it can confirm your upgrade eligibility - then at that point you can put Windows 98 in. This removes lots of complications from a physical upgrade.

First of all, you don't need to install Win98 at all. Just do a fresh install with your Windows XP CD and you will be prompted for a "proof of ownership" of an older version : just insert your original Windows 98 CD inside and it will be ok.

Second, the missing files error during the XP install have usually nothing to do with the upgrade. Usually, it's a RAM or Hard drive fault. Try to "retry" and if it doesn't work :

1. Test your ram memory using www.memtest86.com (burn the ISO on a CD and boot with it)
2. Test your harddrive with the test software on the company's website (ex. maxtor = www.maxtor.com in support, download, powermaX)

thanks ;)

98 cannot be upgraded to Xp dear. some one has misled you.

98 can be only upgraded to next version of 98 that is SE edition and not XP.

try bringing a new XP CD

may be a Compatibility issue, have a look at the below link it might help, or if your really out of ideas, then take it to a repair company so they can fix it up for you. also keep in mind if your xp disc is a fake then there might be problems.
