This sounds like I am joking on you, but seriously, pick up a book and start reading (preferrably a classic). You would be surprised how many new words you find in a book. Good authors have to use an expanded vocabulary to keep readers interested. And reading is a lot more fun than going to a website or picking up the dictionary.

A decade ago to learn English, you had to attend costly English classes or purchase course material like tapes and books. Now you can learn English for free from the comfort of your home using the Internet. The BBC and the British Council offer a number of on line courses, which teach written and spoken English. You can also improve your English by watching television programs and reading English newspapers. For more information, visit http://tinyurl.com/qnzpt

seriously, i like to read my history book. i know, it sounds boring, but the authors are qualified people with PhD's and stuff, so it's very likely that they have words where you're just like: that's a word?
so yeah :]
it doesn't have to be a history book.
try any classic thing.
i've tried reading the dictionary.
but sooner or later it all becomes a blur to you.
reading causes FULL sentences to stick in your head, and these words are easier to put to use because you've already read them in a sentence and have an idea as to how they're used.
:]
good luck w/ expanding your vocabulary!
