To die in the name of "Allah" or any other deity is the definition of martyrdom.

First of all they are not defending their country.
The reason they are called martyr is that they believe that by committing suicide to kill a non believer or infidel, it is an automatic ticket to heaven where they will be rewarded with 11 virgins.

i believe that when the Muslim killed for defending his religion not for his country or his family then he will be a martyr. Because in this life people are living to obey Allah (GOD). Allah want us to help each other and to deal with each other nicely to stay in peace. I believe that Islam came to us to organize our life to be better people and to the earth a better place for life. So when he die defending this religion then he will be a martyr.

Hey being called a martyr is GREAT PR - its way way better than being viewed as a suicidal idiot - and hell a suicidal idiot is not going to encourage more volunteers to the cause, but hey becoming a 'martyr' is noble. Its just Islamic spin.

it doesn't matter if you are called a martyr or hero...to me, you are still a dead person....so what's the point of getting called a martyr/hero if you can't live to enjoy it !!

Instead of answering your question, I'll give you a quote.

"The idea isn't to die for your country, it's to make the other guy die for his."
