I am looking for somewhere affordable, but more importantly somewhere entertaining and unforgetable for a couple.

Hey, Italy in general is a very beautiful country. From my travels to Italy I can't forget Florence...
It's one of my favorites cities. When you read the word "Romanticism" in the dictionaries they should include also the word "Florence".
I love the spirit of that city, the old style of the buildings, the bridges, the Uffizi Gallery, the Giardini Boboli, Ponte Vecchio, Duomo - Cathedral of Santa Maria dei Fiori, and more more ...

Siena!!!!!! It is wonderful. Very "Italian" I would live out the rest my life in this town. My wife and I found this to be one of the most romantic places in Italy. It is affordable and relaxing.
Cinque Terre is fantastic too if you love the outdoors. These 5 little towns are great. If you do go, be sure to do the hiking trails between them. Some of the best views I have ever seen. Very affordable except for the food.
Rome is good because it is Rome. Nothing beats the feel of the city. Very cool. Lots to see and do. You can spend weeks, months, whatever here and still never see it all.
Florence isn't bad, but I liked Sienna better.
Bari is dirty, but a neat place to hang out in southern Italy to get that "feel".
Almost forgot: Pompeii is a must if you are in Rome. It is just a few hours train ride. Be sure to get directions, the town (Pompeii) can be a bit odd.
Venice is one of my wife's favorite places, and I liked it, but not nearly as much as she does.
There are many, many more places, but that would be a book. In fact if you are really interested in a trip, check out a Rick Steve's book. He has some good recommendations that are usually little gems compared to Fodor's, Lonely Planet, etc.

The mountains are supposed to be very serene, but since you're a couple, go to Venice or Florence. Florence isn't as crowded and its very open and beautiful. Rome has a lot of histoory behind it, but if you are looking for some place interesting try venice. Florence is beautiful and it overlooks the countryside, but that gets boring after a while.

Everywhere in Italy is unforgetable. If you want more affordable then head south as everything is less expensive in Southern Italy.

Sorrento is really nice. There is a lot you can do from there - take a boat ride to Amalfi, Positano, Capri, Pompeii, and a few more places. Sorrento is right on the water also. The beaches are not sandy though, mostly rocks. It really is a beautiful place and I highly recommend it!!

Venice is certainly the most romantic city in Italy. If you are looking for something different, try Lake of Como: beautiful and not so touristy...

Venice! You don't have to spend much because you just wander around. Rome is too touristy. Otherwise I would recommend somewhere on the coast.

the Dolomites!
truly beautiful if you like mountains/skiing and have already been to the Italian staples (Rome, Florence, Venice, etc).
Otherwise I would definitely reccommened Florence or Siena.

Florence is magical, beautiful art, cafes not too big!!!!!!!!So romantic...Rome is bigger but a must see too!!!!!!!!!!
