Because, you should focus on God at all times. If you are coveting something you are not focusing on God.

Well, Covetousness fuels Capitalism--so in a sense it can be good if it is controlled and regulated. I like capitalism, it's why I'm employed. But covetousness also fuels war. A case in point was the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in '91.
Additionally, being jealous of what someone else has will take the focus off of you and your own goals; rather than creating a goal and achieving it, you're just out for something easier: Someone else's. It can fuel lazines---it's easier to just want what someone else wants than to try to realize what you want in your own life. l
Covetousness also leads to lust which can result in infidelity. Don't forget the super-obvious one: Stealing.

You shouldn't try to keep up with the Joneses. That is a surefire way to unhappiness. There is always somebody who has more than you. Of course, this is idealistic. I want my neighbors jaguar, iPod, etc. etc. No one is perfect!
EDIT: Um, no bible bubble really. Just my interpretation of why that is a commandment at all. Of course, I guess if wanting your neighbor's stuff actually makes you happy, keep on!

I think that He wants us to be happy with the things that we have and be thankful for the blessings He has already given us rather than focusing on what we can get next. Also, we should be glad that our neighbor is able to get the things they are able to get instead of being envious of them.
God bless,

It actually make people a lot worse off. Coveting leads to enmity. "He has that and I don't... I deserve it. He doesn't." It does not make people feel better. It makes them desire things that don't belong to them and makes them bitter towards those who have them.

I think in the bible it says something about that.
Wanting something can be a powerful motivation. I say, what the hell.

Desires lead to action. It leads to theft when the desire gets strong enough.
Oh! And because its just a material posession - so we should just 'get over it' and forget about it.
