Well you could try using a hair straightener, but if you would like to go cheaper theres alot of store products that are avalible.
Garnier fructis has a really good one called Garnier Fructis Sleek & Shine Weightless Anti-Frizz Serum. it offers anti-frizz protection and guards against humidity. Nutritive Micro-Oils provide extra conditioning benefits to nourish straight, wavy or curly hair and give long lasting smoothness and frizz control. Helps makes hair 5x smoother and 5x stronger and so much shinier*.

Well for starters a lot of people are telling him to use a straightening iron when he says clearly he can't use one.
Being a hairstylist myself it is hard to recommend products or services to hair questions without actually seeing/feeling the hair to see what texture/porosity you have. That being said I can offer 4 suggestions to you.
1. Use a hard hold gel or styling cream to give the hair some weight apply as described by stylist/package. When used properly these heavy hold gels and or styling creams will tame the hair as well as leave it looking natural. A firm hold mousse applied to wet hair and allowed to air dry without disturbing the hair can also tame. Once hair is completely dry use a hair polish and fingers to comb through the hair gently. (This helps to keep your hair from looking frozen in place.) I would recommend going with a stylist recommended product here. Most product bought outside of a salon environment are cheap because they use low quality ingredients. Gels, and creams will contain alcohol and waxes for fillers which will in fact dry out the hair splitting the ends and making it even less manageable. Salon products are also concentrated and a 6-10 dollar tube of Joico(RT) gel can often last longer then that 2 dollar tub of *wonder gel super extra firm hold* When used properly salon product literally are a dab will do ya.
2. Call around and find a recommendation to a stylist who can help you deal with that crazy hair. There are stylist who can and do specialize in helping maintain that wild mane. When you find a good one stick to them like GLUE.
3. Save up and get a chemical relaxing treatment this would be a semi permanent solution to your poofy problem. This is a service that is almost like a reverse perm. While your hair may not be curly, a chemical straightener can help to take away some of the poof. The straightening service doesn't do the damage it used to years ago, with new developments and chemical formulations a straightening would be a more viable solution. It would be a one time output every 4-6 months and you shouldn't have the need to spend a lot of money in between treatments on products. A good maintenance shampoo and conditioner and you will be good to go. *BEWARE* should you decide to go this route make sure you go to a salon that uses a quality chemical relaxing system. Some salons will use perm a perm solution saying that is does the same thing. It doesn't the combing action you need to do during the service would cause irreparable damage to your hair if a perm solution is used. Thus making it MORE poofy.
4. Get a body perm. This option would reform the hair in a more defined way as well as giving it more of a style. The stylist would have large perm rods to reform your hair giving is a more defined look. This would also give your hair some structure and shape.
I know I went on and on but I hope I helped you to make a more informed choice. While a couple options have a higher initial cost they will save you money in the long run.

You can use a smal amount of conditioner that has been watered down as a frizz control agent and to straighten. Or Pantene's frizz control is really good and inexpensive. Also when straightening your hair with a flat iron or blow dryer be sure not to over dry or under dry or you will be poofy again.

Use an oil or cream that is for defrizzing. The weight should flatten it out. The only other suggestion is to blow dry it and/or flat iron. Why can't you do that? It's the easiest thing to do as long as you put some product on the hair, first, so you don't burn it.

use a smoothing shampoo and conditioner from the store, there are many good inexpensive ones on the market, Just look for ones that are for Frizzy hair or Smooth hair. When you do find a product of your chose they usually have a styling range as well so grab a straightening balm... have alook at the Sunsilk or Pantene range. good luck.

I comb my hair straight after the shower, and I use a blow dryer and just keep combing it straight. A straight iron works well too, why cant you use one?? It doesnt have to be on super hot to work....go to a beauty salon and have them straighten your hair,if you like the way it comes out , buy the products they use..

I guess Bedhead is somewhat expensive ($15.95 at Trade Secret) but I love it. It comes in a pretty big can and comes out like hair spray (doesn't work like hair spray though) but it works. It is called "Spoil Me: Defrizzer, Smoother & Instant Restyler"

it kind of depends on what kind of hair you have. what about some gel? if you think gels make you look nerdy, try a new kind of shampoo. but just in case you have any allergic reactions, always buy the smallest bottles.
