This was mentioned on cancer.org

I don't know if it applies to people without cancer.

For sore throats:

Eat soft, creamy foods such as cream soups, cheeses, mashed potatoes, yogurt, eggs, custards, puddings, cooked cereals, ice cream, casseroles, gravies, syrups, milkshakes, and commercial liquid food supplements.

it is true that cold or cool things will make the irritation feel less bothersome.
ice water is fine as are really many cold things but ice water is mostly the best way to go .
you know that stores sell all sorts of candy/ meds to help with a sore throat so i wont bother with that.
in short the answer is yes cold things will make it feel better.

To numb your throat and ease the pain; other than that you can try using Cepacol sore throat with pain numbing relief or Cloroceptic throat spray. The ice cream just taste better than having to take medicine. Hope that this helps!

When you have a SORE throat cool or cold stuff helps numb the pain in the throat that is why it is recommended. Not because it helps it.
Avoid milk and milk products as they increase phelgm production worsening any mucous in lungs or nose.
What helps kill sore throat germs is gargling with warm salt water. The salt water and agitation of the gargling kills off the germs.

Well I suppose it just numbs the throat so it makes it feel better. If you have strep or something or you're just really clogged, maybe stay away from ice cream because the dairy could drive you nuts. Try something with no or minimal dairy like sherbet or italian ice

while it does feel good to have cold stuff on your sore throat, for me personally ice cream and other milk products make my throat worse. while my mom's generation swears by gargling with warm salt water. I have learned another remedy that works well apple cider vinegar.. mix 1 tblspn of the apple cider vinegar to 8oz of apple juice. and drink i do this at the first sign of a sore throat. anthoer thing that helps is hot tea with lemon and honey.

i do not no about eating the cold stuff, but the best old time remedy is to gargle with hot salt water. put you about 3 to 4
teaspoonful's of salt in a glass, and i always just run hot water out of the sink, as hot as i can get it. gargle the glassfull and most of the time the sore throat is gone by morning.

You have heard that because doctors tell you do it to help ease pain. There is no medical benefit other than pain relief and the cold could reduce swelling. When my throat is sore, I like hot stuff - like coffee or tea.
