The official language is a form of Malay called Bahasi Malaysia, but many dialects of Malay are spoken.
Also there are large numbers of Chinese in Malaysia who speak various dialects or languages, including Mandarin, Hokkien and Cantonese. There is also a large Indian community; the greatest number are from south India and Tamil is their main language, but there are Hindi, Gujarati and speakers of other Indian languages too.
In the hills live the negrito hill tribes, with several of their own (pre-Malay) languages.
In some places such as Melaka, ancient mixed communities exist with their own dialects, such as mixtures of Chinese and Malay, and Portuguese and Malay.
