I have Avast. It works for me, whereas a regularly updated AVG did not.

To heck with Norton. I might try Panda or Kaspersky, if it starts raining money.

before installing any of these, go to nortons website and uninstall it correctly.

All of these are ones that I personally use and all are free.

AVG Removes I-Worm/Stration · BackDoor.Generic3.GBB and .GBC · Worm/Generic.FX · Exploit.WMF

Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free, so there's no harm giving it a try to see if something has invaded your computer.

Trojans/Backdoors can not be removed unless you identify its name. For Each one there is a separate writeup of manual removal. For that you need to temporarily disable system restore (in XP) and boot in safe mode then run (recently updated) virus scan. When it tells you its name, note down the exact name. Do a google search for manual removal . You will get instructions from the same company(Symantec, Norton). Copy the instructions page on hard disk and follow the instructions.

I suggest that you try to carryout system restore to a day previous to the day when there was no virus or any problems. It may be a few weeks or months back. You have to decide the date. Detailed instructions are posted at http://fixit.in/systemrestore.html
The problem is likely to be solved. Then,You insatll a standard antivirus soft ware such as Norton, AVG , Avast ( free antivirus software and Ad-aware, Ewido ( free spyware removers). You can download free softwares at

Try booting your computer in Safe Mode, and then running the antivirus/antispy program. If that doesn't work, do what all the other people said.
