roughly 5 1/2 year ago my family was overcome by carbon monoxide poisoning. At the time my children were 10 months and 2 1/2 years old. (32 months to be exact) we spent all day in the ER and were all aware and fine except for the youngest one. After this we average doctor visits for him 3 to 4 times a month. He has mental health issues (adhd) learning disibilities he is now turning 7 and going through his second year of kindergarten. He now has asthma, numerous allergies, extremely hyperactive, get sick frequently, and he doesnt have the mentality of a 7 year old or a 6 year old for that matter. He frequents an allergist, a psychologist, and his regular physician. He has had cellulitius 3 times within a year in different places. Since poisoning took place when he was an enfant we have no before comparison. I asked the family physician and he said possible but psychologist brushed it off. Anyone have any info about "children" and carbon monoxide.

It sounds like he may have gained some brain damage or truma from the experience.

They are difficult to distingush and can both effect learning.

The biggest difference is that brain damage can favor an inablity to learn or age mentally (anotherwards the most you can expect their behavior and understanding to reach is that of a tween,.. never entirely an adult). Where as Truma would put them in and out of certain behaviors. Not that anyone competant these days,.. therefore you may never get things straight until they are in their late twenties (my mom's friend is getting hit by that and so much remorse right now).

Organs can also fail much quicker. Simple common things like Tensils or more complicated things like liver and kidnies. That is part of what happens during the poisoning,.. the "poison" is redirected to all the filters first. So be perpared for things to need replaced before they are 30 even without them ever doing drugs. This means some day you may need to check your family members for compatiblity. YOU do not want to be the doner if you were also exposed,... it gets over looked some times... but the obvious is your organs won't be in very good shape and fail too quickly for your child. Then they end up at the end of a VERY long list for a LONG time.

The long term effects of poisoning by carbon monoxide can be extremely serious. The long term effects of breathing in carbon monoxide can affect:

memory
brain function
behaviour
cognition.
It can also cause permanent damage to other major organs within the body, such as the heart.

It is thought that the hippocampus, which is the section of the brain that deals with new memories, can be particularly susceptible to long term damage from CO poisoning.

The effects of carbon monoxide poisoning over the long term may be subtle or may be very severe, depending on the extent of poisoning:

Up to forty percent of those poisoned can suffer problems that range from amnesia, headaches and memory loss to personality and behavioural changes, loss of muscle and bladder control and impairment of co-ordination and vision.

if there was a lack of oxygen to the brain i am sure there would be a possibility of this happening. and with CM poisoning that could happen. when you say 'fine except for the youngest one' do you mean that the effects lasted longer or that the child is having problems now? do any of these issues run in your family? that would be a clue. perhaps ask your doctor to consult a specialis to ask the question.

if it was on but not lit, there will be no carbon monoxide carbon monoxide is caused by a low oxygen burn. If it was lit, it would just make carbon dioxide. The gas (propane or lpg) itself is pretty harmless, it just displaces oxygen, which is probably why you have a headache. Don't worry. No carbon monoxide.
