Of the existing answers, misshopp..'s list is easily the best - she has taste! The best restaurants in London are:

Gordon Ramsay SW3 3 Michelin stars
Capital 2 Michelin stars
The Square 2 Michelin Stars
Gavroche 2 Michelin stars
Pied a Terre 2 Michelin stars

Of these Gordon Ramsay is almost impossible to get a table at, and the Square is good but I find it underwhelming. Gavroche is very traditional but does fine desserts. I would suggest Pied a Terre, where chef Shane Osborne is cooking really well right now, or the Capital after that. Both these give you a sporting chance of getting a table. Also see my web site below for reviews of these places, contact details and further ideas.

Baltic is my favorite restaurant!!! It's the most delicious, comforting food in the world. You MUST try it. You will not be disappointed.

http://www.balticrestaurant.co.uk/index.htm
Cuisine: Russian / Eastern European

This is a review in the Economist.
Thanks to its proximity to the Tate Modern and the South Bank, the formerly scruffy neighbourhood around Waterloo station is enjoying a resurgence. Baltic, a cavernous neo-Polish restaurant hidden away in a listed former industrial building on Blackfriars Road, is an elegant addition to the area’s burgeoning culinary scene.

Baltic’s cuisine is Polish in inspiration, but there are no stodgy stews here: instead try the likes of Bozbash, a braised shoulder of lamb with tomato, coriander and pomegranate. Traditional Eastern European flavours abound—dill, pickles and sour cream—but the kitchen gives everything a contemporary spin. The interior, too, is thoroughly modern: all white walls, exposed beams and chandeliers on fibre-optic strands, designed by Seth Stein, who counts the former cabinet minister Peter Mandelson among his clients.

Of course, eating is only half the fun in a Polish establishment. Enjoy an aperitif or a digestif in Baltic’s striking bar, which boasts a mind-blowing array of flavoured and infused vodkas, served with a flourish.

Baltic features live jazz on Sunday afternoons and evenings. A private room, seating 30, is available for corporate bookings.
