Ok I am having an engagement party at a bar.. I am renting a room.. I don't want this to be fancy because my wedding will be fancy.. Just for people to come and celebrate, drink and dance.
I don't know what kind of favors or decorations.. what about gifts do you ask? I dunno.. HELP

The reason I am throwing my own is because no one will throw it for me..
My mom isn't in to big on shin digs and said she won't throw me one.
The other side of the fam won't throw one either.
I really want one and have been hearing that a lot of bride and grooms are throwing them, themselves.
So instead of being rude ans asking people to throw us an engagement party.. I'm just giving us one.. Thats why I'm keeping it just a party at a bar

We had our engagement party at a restaurant & said no gifts, but instead for our friends to join us in a meal together to celebrate & asked them just to pay for their meal. We payed for alcohol.

I knew that i couldnt invite everyone i wanted to our wedding so invited these people to the engagment party instead. It was a great way to celebrate with everyone.

I dont thik engagement parties are that important, your wedding day is the big one, so keep it simple. I've never heard of gift favours at an engagment party?

Good luck with everything :O)

Engagement parties are almost never held by the bride/groom to be, but thier families (usually the grooms parents throw the engagement party). Never, never, NEVER mention gifts or a registry(especially on an invitation!) it's the utmost in tacky. It's pretty much like gift begging to do so, rather than celebrating your engagement, which I'm sure is what you want above all else. People will most likely give you $$ or perhaps something from your registry, if you have one. The only way to "get the word out" about your registry is if you are directly asked, or you can let your bridemaids/mom/mother-in-law know where you are registered, since people will probably ask them. Those little registry cards are the WORST....toss them away if the store gives them to you,,,don't let anyone tell you it's OK nowadays to include them in an invite.

As far as decor/favors, if it's going to be at a bar, you are right not to make it fancy. I would keep it quite simple and pick one or 2 colors, and do lots of one thing (i.e. balloons or simple flowers arrangements). I don't think you need favors, but what about small bottles of champagne with a ribbon announcing "We're engaged" or "John and Jane are Engaged." My fiance and I had little poker chips made with our names on them, and the phrase "Lucky in Love", since we both enjoy Vegas/gambling. Pick something for favors that is easy to make (or have made) and that reflects you as a couple. Congrats and Best of Luck!

Why are you throwing your own engagement party? Usually someone else throws it, in your honor.

Also, remember anyone you invite to the engagement party MUST also be on the invite list for the wedding-- you can't eliminate them from the list later.

Gifts are not usually given at engagement parties. You certainly shouldn't request any. A few people might come with a gift or card for you, but open them later-- they are not the focus and it is not a shower. Send thank you notes afterwards.

Being a polite bride is of tremendous importance. Decorations and favors are beside the point.
