Martini is a brand of Italian vermouth, named after the Martini & Rossi distillery in Turin which was partly founded by Alessandro Martini.
Martini
The drink that says cocktail!
2 oz. Gin or Vodka
2 drops Dry Vermouth (use less vermouth for a drier martini)
Garnish with olive or lemon twist
Combine all ingredients in cocktail shaker with ice. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass
Shake or Stir
Shaking will result in a colder drink than simply stirring the ingredients. However some think that 'bruises' the spirit.

A real martini is gin or vodka and vermouth, usually garnished with olives or tiny onions. They are wonderful. (I like vodka ones myself, but both are very very good.)
There's a bit of argument over how much vermouth to add, but it's really just personal preference.
Now, all these neon colored girly drinks masquerading as appletinis and crantinis and whatever other silly name they put on them are not actually martinis. They are cocktails, and the glass is not even a martini glass, it's properly called a cocktail glass. So, those things don't count.
I urge you to try the real thing. It's unbelievably good. In fact, I think I may have to go fix myself one now. :)
