I think in almost every state by 18 years you are considered "common law" married. So the only thing missing is the ceremony.

Now if one of you is looking for a ceremony and the other is not then you need to sit down and talk it over, by yourselves or with a counselor if you cannot make a decision yourselves.

well, why not get married? it's been 18 years. i guess it's not for some people, but i think 18 years..at this point you must be pretty much married without all the legalties and in love. so i guess it's really up to you.

If you think that you can take your relationship to another level discuss it with your partner. However, marriage is a risky thing to do. You and your partner have to be willing to COMMIT to each other. You should take marriage seriously. On your wedding day, as you say your vows (hopefully you understand what you're saying), you are promising to your partner that you will be with her/him forever. Marriage is like a contract that is taken to another level. There are no loopholes: Do NOT think: Oh. there are some things that I don't really like about my partner, but I guess after we get married he/she will change.. if not I can just divorce. This is why marriage is risky, but it's worth it. All marriages face some difficulties, and it's up to them to resolve it together. Remember, these people made a promise that they will be together in GOOD times and in BAD. Therefore, people who get divorce because they can't stand each other are morons.
It's good that you guys are taking time with your relationship-why? well the more time you spend with someone, the better you get to know him/her.

Common law marriage only matters if you separate. If you stay together you cannot file taxes jointly or have any of the other benefits of marriage.

Does it bother you not to be married? Does your partner want to be married? Does your partner refuse to marry you? If so, is it important enough to you to make or break the relationship? Ask yourself these questions.

And no children? Congratulations! Time to ask whether or not he/she wants to get married. If you do and he/she does not, time to move on unless you are happy with the arrangement. If you are looking to have a family one day soon, better get serious about marriage to someone forthwith.

first, ask your self first if you are really ready w/ this kind of responsilbility.. we all know that marriage is a complicated thing.. once you realize that it is a mistake, it will be a chaos in your ife.. its not the years that matter here.. its the love, the satisfaction... is it really her? well i think you wont be able to reach that long years of dating if you dont love her.. you know what, the person who can answer your question is "you"..
