Sounds like a screen pass to the fullback coming after faking a hand off to the tailback and then a short pass to the other side to create a screen pass formation designed to fool the enemy into thinking they were being attacked on one side but where actually being attack on the other. This would give a small number of concentrated soldiers the change to overpower in numbers on one side of the line with the hot potato in the middle of the group.
I don't know, but it was a bloody result during WWI with machine guns spitting bullets. It must have seemed like a great idea at the time, but lining up and charging into machine guns is not a good plan. Not to mention all the other weapons exploding around them, in between them, and right on top of their heads. Lord.
You have to admire the soldiers ability to do their jobs through all the wars between human beings, but you also don't need to wonder why the lessons of one generation do not, more readily, get passed down to the next generation.
Because, of course, most of the soldiers never made it home in any responsible shape to lead or be a whole member of the family. Most of them trapped into that tactic were dead or severally wounded on the battlefield, not to mention being hit with a profound life long depression.
