In the Army everyone has the same job. Rifleman. It doesn't matter what you were trained for, you are a rifleman when the **** hits the fan. So go infantry. It's tough but you will learn a lot of valuable survival skills. Serving your country is a noble and decent thing to do. There are a lot of cowards out there. You should be proud of your friend.

If I were your friend I would just wait until he could take the test again and while he is waiting to retest he should go to the library and check out any practiced test. Because the higher he score the better jobs or MOS is what the army calls it, for example if he wants to be like a medic or dentist assistant then he really needs to score higher then a 29.

Only 4% of army can fall below 31 on test - your friend will need some attribute that they want other than a warm body. The % is set by congress. They give it again at MEPS. The lowest scores in army as usually assigned fabric repair or laundry. I am not kidding or being mean, this is according to the army website.

minimum score is a 35 to get into the Navy

he has a slightly better chance with the Army, but what jobs he qualifies for all depend on his line scores, not his overall score. he won't know until he sits down with the Classifier who will offer him (possibly limited) choices from what is currently available.

If he wanst to do better, he should get a copy of any ASVAB study book and study up for those six months.

Is he brain dead? a 29? Maybe a target...I forget the MOS for that...oh I know he can be a shoe shiner...again...I forgot the MOS. Tell Mr. Gump that the military needs some smarter men and women nowadays.
