I would like to sleep like other people, but for some reason lately, I have been sleeping short periods of time then waking up and then sleeping a little longer. Is this a sign of old age? I am 42.
I used to sleep in in the morning, but now I am bright eyed and bushey tailed at about 4 or 5 am every morning.
What ever happened to the days I could sleep in until 9 or 10 am?

Are you experiencing anxiety about something? Usually when that happens to me, it's because I am anxious or stressed out about something I am going to be doing the next day. It's not really healthy to feel "bright eyed and bushy tailed" after so little sleep, because it means you are running on adrenaline, and will eventually crash.

With regard to the 4 am or 5 am rising, you have reset your sleep-wake cycle somehow. Do you travel for a living? Jet lag can do this. To fix, stay up a whole night, then the next night go to bed at the time you want to. Set the clock for the time you wish to rise. Your body will readjust.

With regard to the short periods of time, skip all caffeine. Try a glass of milk before bed or a warm bath. You sound stressed and the dreams are waking you up.

Old people tend to sleep less, because instinct tells them that wasting time on sleep is no good for people that are too old.
