If we could stop aging/prevent death, either through genetics, organ replacement, or merging with technology, would religion persist? Consider that people would then never make it to the afterlife (assuming you believe in one.)

(if you've going to post nonsense replies like, "it's impossible" or "Jesus is coming for you no matter what." please move on. I'm interested in thoughtful opines.)

It would be a severe blow to religion were we to become immortal. A big pillar of religion is based on allaying our fear or apprehension of death. If not the biggest pillar.

Immortality would strike at the roots of all religion. The concept would become redundant and meaningless. Religion also gives us a place in this world. If however, we are immortal, we are like gods, and are already complete masters of creation. Being completely secure, we would throw away the false security that religion provides us with.

As for the good and bad that religion provides us with, the only solid basis is pain and pleasure. Or joy and sorrow. Were we never to feel pain, or were we to be immortal, this would be meaningless with regard to each other. The only morality left would be the morality of aesthetics.

Yes... Religion is there not for immortality questions alone, but it is simply a manifestation of ignorance. Of course, most of today's religions will be doomed, but there will be other new religions about things we don't know! Like Aliens and the Huge Universe, and bla bla bla....

Look at human history and you will see that there is nothing special about today's religion. All religions try to provide comforting answers to hopes and dreams of its own age. For today's generation we certainly don't need that God, but still there are hopes and dreams of becoming immortal. But I think is better education, and new advances in science, more people will realize that God is not going to help us with anything, whether or not he existed, and more people will go over this religion idea.

sure, there'll in no way be a time at the same time as people are not unaware of something. see you later as there is lack of information there'll be a choose for faith, guidelines and so on. I say this because some have already attained immortality, yet faith continues to be the following.

As much as I hate to admit it, many will turn from religion or create new ones to better suit their lives. They would think of religion as fiction or mythology. They would have no reason to save their souls from Hell because for them there will be no Hell; they would just live on. But, I personally I can't see myself going through life not believing in anything. It's pretty depressing to think that this is it.

Good question; it gives you something to think about.

Immortality would probably mean an end to religious belief, at least as far as afterlife was concerned. As immortals we would be as gods and would really not have any need to worship any other being...god or not....

Nope. Religions sell a second chance at life and gullible people love to buy it.
