I am 16 and my teeth are really bad. My mom doesn't work because there are 5 of us kids and my dad is a minister who works at a ministry that doesn't provide health insurance. I am desperate for braces but of course I don't have the money! Does an body know of an organization or something that can help financially?

OK for one thing I have a job and I am trying to save money for college so that my parent don't have too. I am willing to work my rear off to get braces but how many hours can a teen work while still in college? Try to be nice and don't diss on my need for money.

The 1-800-4-Braces answer was awesome. There is also some financial aid, but it's based on need. I'm not sure where you live, but in the States each state has a medical card program for those determined to be "at or below poverty level". The criteria is not only income, but extreme orthodontic need as well. It's definitely something to check into. You may want to ask your dentist about it. Good Luck!

I like the person who suggested you negotiate with the doctor! there are many who would laugh you out the door, but it can't hurt to ask! I'd be impressed by a teen w/ that much pluck! (sorry; i'm not an orthodontist and don't do braces, so i can't help per se!)

The suggestion w/ the dental school is an excellent one. MUCH cheaper and just as good; only more time consuming is all.
no biggie.

lastly, make college the bigger priority! once you get a degree, you'll earn a ton more money and be able to afford your own insurance or pay straight up.

If you don't get them now, it's totally OK....20s even 30s is not too late at all and lots of adults have braces. People accept that. Tom Cruise didn't get his til he was 39 and he turned out ok! (ok, bad example, but you get the idea! good luck

Are there any colleges within driving distance that have a dental school? Get your parents to check into this. Sometimes you can get services at a much-reduced rate or free by allowing advanced dental students to do the procedures. They are well supervised by instructors that are dentists.

Ask your parents to talk to your family dentist. If your teeth are as bad as you say, then your dentist has probably already recommended seeing an orthodontist. Sometimes the orthodontic consultation is free. Your dad or mom could ask the orthodontist if there is a way to fund the need for braces. I've seen plenty of kids who come from poor families get braces. I'm hoping you can get them, sweetie, because I know it will do wonders for your self-esteem. Don't give up. Even if you have to wait until you are older, get them then. One of my nieces got them when she was in her early 20's because her family couldn't afford them when she was a teenager.

Hope it all works out!!

The only thing I know of is that you can actually finance the braces through a company. Your dentist should have a pamphlet on it, they finance cosmetics. Beyond that, negotiate out a price with the dentist. Tell him, hey, Im a kid, I need this and the folks really can't afford it. I'm willing to go get a job, so what is the best deal you can make a responsible young person like me. Then, go get a job and pay for it. Everyone will be quite impressed.
