I was in for 4 and a half years. I am a E-6. Should I go back in and do my 20 or 30 or stay out and persue a whole new career in the Border Patrol. Also does anyone know if my service time in the Marines counts toward retirement for the Border Patrol???
Thanks.

For anyone who questions my RAnk and time.... Since I was in Bootcamp I graduated as guide. Guide at MCT, Number 1 at MOS School. Marine of the Quarter and of the year at 2nd Marine Division. Meritorious promotion after Meritorious promotion. 300 PFT's everytime. Expert Rifle Range. Always did my MCI's. Was hardcore the whole time in. Did everything and whent everywhere the Corps asked. I was not a terd. And yes it is possible. Its called Accelerated Promotion. I only got out cause my wife was scared. But now she even says maybe I should go back in. If you need tips on accelerated promotion ask me and Ill reply. Not being cocky I just know I am Squared Away and dedicated to the Corps.

You could get called back either way. That's a personal decision though.. did you like being gone all the time and always on call? Only you know if that is the life for you. I would think service time in the Marines would count towards Border Patrol.

Your military time won't automatically be applied since the ban on double dipping. However, you can "buy-back" your time from the military, do 20 or so w/ the USBP and the retire with the time you spent in green + your years in the Marines. If you spend 20 in the BP you retire and 24.5 years total service.
You're going to get paid A LOT more in the BP but you run the risk of drawing less than desirable postings. Still, they aren't as bad as the sandbox.
Also, the BP has upped the entrance age. It is no longer limited to 37 but has increased to 40. So, if you want to go back to the Marines and can get your 20 in by age 40 you have the option of picking up a BP career at that time.

stay or go with the border patrol. the military will tell you you're an e-5 because you got out. thus you have to regain your rank. going with the border patrol will allow you to get better benefits but you can retire from the military with 50% after twenty from the time you get out. but the border patrol will accept your time as counting towrd your twenty and possibly get you a bigger check after twenty of govt service. but if you stay for twenty in the corps, don't transfer your military time for more toward thirty with the bordser patrol cuz you lose the monthly military retirement if you do that. get another govt job, but keep your military retirement, then you'll get the second check for other govt time, and also keep the military retirement check at the same time. whatever you do, just be sure you weigh the pros and cons of your decision.

It's completely up to you. I'm happy that I've been in the Corps and couldn't think of any other life for myself. As for the border patrol, I'm not sure how your military time would affect you there. As for the guy who answered above me...I made E-6 in 4 years...Now an E-9...course it's taken me a lot longer to reach this rank...but to get to staff sergeant in four it can definately be done.

The decision will have to be yours, You have to weigh the pros and cons of the Marines and the Border Patrol. You time in service will count toward retirement.

Yeah I have to question how you made e-6 in 4 1/2 years. What MOS are you in? I don't know any Marines who have been in a little over 4 years who are ready to be a SSGT.
