By being diagnosed by a mental health professional.

You do not want to have this diagnosis. It is a very difficult illness to treat and it does not have a very positive prognosis.

It shares many symptoms with other disorders, such as Bipolar and PTSD, which are not necessarily "better" to have, but are more responsive to treatment.

But if you are suffering with this, then it is better to know so that you can begin to work on yourself and your life. The life of a person with bpd is often filled with chaos, instability, and depression.

And it is not true that if you have a personality disorder you don't have the awareness to know it. It is not a psychotic disorder! When you have bpd you know damn well that something is very wrong and generally you have known that for a very long time. It's hard not to notice when your life is a huge self-created disaster or when your behavior and reactions continually cause very significant problems for you. If you have trouble maintaining any sort of relationships, trouble staying in work or school, trouble with severe mood swings, trouble with impulsivity...it is not a subtle thing.

A lot of the same symptoms fall within other possibilities. If you have researched this on the Internet and feel like you or someone you care about has this disorder, then make an appointment with a qualified psychiatrist. I don't know if you can be evaluated by a clinical psychologist, but I'd skip that route because a psychiatrist will be the one to prescribe medication for this. I recently dealt with a psychologist and bouncing between the doctor and the psychologist for months, I got so frustrated that I "fired" them both!

If you are asking then you don't have it.
Personality disorders dont' have the self-awareness to ask the questions.
You may have a personality that tends towards a certain character type, but personality disorders are hard to deal with and the individuals are as well.

Some characteristics of BPD include unstable and intense relationships (alternating between loving and then hating someone to the extreme), impulsive behavior (spending sprees, binge eating, reckless driving), frequent mood shifts, recurrent suicidal thoughts or attempts, self-mutilation, feelings of emptiness, feelings or fear of abandonment, and identity disturbance.

If you are able to hold down a job, have friends, manager your finances and find enjoyment in life, you probably should not worry about it. Most likely you are more "normal" than the psychiatrist.

many of us have symptoms of BPD. doesn't mean we have it. just that certain aspects of our lives are feeling out of control. also, people are often diagnosed with BPD when other aspcts of their lives are out of control such as eating disorders etc which is a completely different illness. chances are that if you are questioning it you won't have it.

Exactly. You have to be assessed by a mental health professional (psychologist, psychiatrist, etc).

Technically you don't until an approved doctor diagnoses you.
