The word Imam in Arabic means the one who leads[ people]. Imam has to be someone liked by his congregation/community and is often chosen by them.
The function of Imam is to help his community go towards a more God conscious society. He leads prayers, gives the Friday sermon, educates, solved domestic issues, advises the community, and makes sure poor and needy are looked after in his community.
Some to more than others, some do less. The basic function as seen by many will be Leading prayers and giving Sermons. But traditionally they were truly leaders of Muslim society and made sure their communities were well educated, well settled, and well spiritual wise. Many still strive to fit in these role models.

but it depends on who is the Imam because some do more (Masha Allah) and some do less...look it up

I believe the Imam is comparable to a priest or minister in the Christian faith. They lead prayer, etc. My muslim friends, correct me if I'm wrong.
