Please, if you can, avoid citing Lee Strobel, Josh McDowell and the Bible itself. I am thinking more along the lines of C.S. Lewis, Alister McGrath, etc. Thanks!

I don't understand you limitation. An atheist isn't going to read the Bible properly anyhow. But Lee Strobel or Josh McDowell have great icebreaker type books.

Well I suppose you have to ask yourself why you are reading up on Christianity if your an Atheists, or simply if you are the Christian that wishes to educate an Atheist. I have heard the book, The Case For Christ by Lee Strobel is very good. Apparently it is an investigation of evidence which Jesus does exist. This may be a good resource for non-believers who need proof rather than faith alone.

Well, considering what they believe. I would pick a book I think they would enjoy. Many years ago I read, The Sword of Shannara; by Terry Brooks. A friend loaned it to me, I started reading that Friday night and it was so good, I finished it that weekend and returned the book to my friend on Monday. He could not believe I read that whole book over the weekend. Ha!
