I'm a former muslim convert, so whether or not you would be killed depends largely upon where you live. Some of us do stay alive even post-apostasy.
If you've seriously considered the possibility and you have no hesitation, I would go to the local mosque (masjid) around twilight (as you'll be there either in time for the maghrib prayer or just between it and isha) and ask to speak to the imam. If you'd like to make sort of contact beforehand, look to see if a local mosque has a website and a way to email the imam or board members.
After that, it's a simple matter of a little ritual ablution and testifying to your faith (the shahada) in front of a couple of witnesses.

Wow ... I suggest you go to the Local Mosque and take the Shahadah there.
Once you say in front of 3 witnesses
"There is no god but Allah (swt) and Muhammad is the messenger of God"
You are a muslim
But if you are thinking of converting take a really good time studying Islam to know what you're getting into. It takes a lot of dedication.
Make sure you go to your local mosque to convert.

Go to your Local Mosques and tell as sister of Imam you want to
"make my Declaration today."
The Shaddah is "I bear witness that there is no God but God and Muhammad is his messenger."
Don't listen to the other racist remarks. Islam is a simple religion that answers questions and eables you to gain mental and sprtiual peace. The Muslims will be happy to help you, just select a Masjid that is closely to the Quran.

Converting your religion to Islam is very easy and simple :
1) You must visit a local mosques and try to meet the ulama or teacher of the mosques.It is better if you go to a mosques nearing to praying time such as at noon,in the afternoon,at dusk,at night or after dawn in the early morning,because you can meet many muslims there before or after praying time.
2)You must say syahadat in front of ulama and at least 2 witness
es which contains a vow that you acknowledge Allah and no other god than Allah and you acknowledge that Muhammad pbuh is the messenger of Allah
3)You can ask for evidence to ulama in the form a written state-
ment that you have converted your religion to Islam by stating your name,age,address,name of place and date that will be signed by ulama
4)You will be greated/welcomed by all attendances of the mosques at that time because we are brothers and sisters
5)Since that time you must pray at least 5 times a day as a compulsory for muslims by reciting Al Fatihah and other short surahs.
6)You must learn islamic teaching step by step after you become muslim such as holy qur'an and hadith translated into your own language and other books about Islam and practice it in your every day of life such do not eat bacon/pig and animal blood,do neat eat died animal without slaughtering with saying bismillah hirohman nirohim.If you are rich enough you must give alms or donations for the poors and orphans,you do not allow to steal,kill,gamble,insult,telling a lie,cheat,alcoholic drink,drug addict,adultery/fornication,conceit etc..

All you need to do is to testify two verses as below:
Ashandualahilaha ilalah, Washaduana Muhammadal rasululah
Meaning: I testify there is no God, but the Almighty, Allah.
I also testify that Muhammad is the last messenger
of Allah.
This testimonial should be witnessed by at least two muslims
in front of the religion guru.

Some would say that all you have to do is proclaim your acknowledgement of Muhammed as God's Last Prophet and the Quaran as his Word. Simple.
You might want to talk to an Imam first, though.

You have to recite "I bear witness that there is no God except Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah" in Arabic:
"Ash hadu anlla ilaha ilallah, wa ash hadu anna Muhammadan rasul ullah"

Islam is not bad, the Koran has the same text as our Bible, well, the old Testament that is. They just doesn't recognize Jesus as the son of God and as the Savior. For them Jesus is a prophet. Just like us, who are waiting for the second coming of Christ, they are waiting for the first coming,... either way, we all just want to be saved.

First thing you have to do is find someone that is Muslim and start attending worship with them...they can tell you about taking up the Muslim faith
