Studies have proven addiction is a physiological response. It's not something someone can just stop out of the blue most of the time so yes, it is a real medical condition.

With that said, that is no excuse to not get help to overcome your addiction. There are a lot of different therapies available to drug addicts.

Drug addiction in my opinion is like Alcoholism-some people genetically have a addictive personality which does NOT MEAN you have to be a drug addict or a alcoholic for unlike cancer there is a CHOICE to DO OR NOT TO DO. But it does mean that you are more inclined to become addicted. So you cannot social drinl or do social drug playing around. At 11 I'm sure someone did it or you read or heard about it for your blood cannot possible tell you that sniffing glue makes you high-blood cannot carary that kind of information-that is leaned from enviroment. you were exposed to it.Also has nothing to do with Christianity as in a non-Christian will be a drug user easier than a Christian but you can use Christianity to strengthen your resolve NOT to DO IT.Prayer helps esp whever you get the urge and you think of doing drugs you pray instead for God to help you and the urge will pass if you pray in earnest. But if you fail do NOT GIVE UP BUT TRY AGAIN Not To Do it. If you are hooked on a drug now the first step is to talk with a friend or the priest or minister if you go to church(also a very good idea to help get off and stay away from drugs-find a small church and pray-. If your Insurance does not cover a Clinic and counseling for to dry up is not enough need cpunseling and support the contact your COUNTY Mental Health Dept(every County has one) and you'll be told where and how to go about it-all is held in confidence by law and you pay as you can afford or if you can't pay pay nothing-that is afree service to all citizens-may have to show residence proof like a utility bill and wage -check stub proof to determine what if any you'll pay. The important thing is you make that FIRST STEP. Good Luck-will pray you get the strength and determination that is needed and also a Merry and Holiest of Christmases.

I don't think it is a disease, but I do believe a person could have a genetic predisposition to addictive behavior. I have watched this in families for many years, including mine and my husband's. It seems that in certain families those who try substances such as alcohol or drugs will become addicted. Only those who stay away from them altogether are safe. In other families, people can dabble and then easily quit, or be social drinkers for years with no problems. I've also noticed that the addictions are not limited to substances, but to anything- pornography, playing video games, computers, gambling. Some people just can't seem to break away from anything that gives them any kind of gratification.
When I say "can't" I don't mean literally. I gave my life to Jesus 23 years ago, and not only did He help me stay away from those things, I even grew to hate the very thought of them. I do still have to work though at things like computer games (and Yahoo Answers!) that will eat up a lot of time because I have a hard time quitting once I start. "I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me."
Please get help. I watched my husband die from the damage his addictions did to his body. I'm raising 6 children alone.

Yes. It seems some people are more prone to use drugs or alcohol to excess which leads to addiction. It is thought by many people that it may be an allergy to the drug. An alcoholic or drug addict cannot use without losing control of their intake. This may be part physical and part psycological. Some people who suffer from depression may self medicate in an attempt to feel better because they can't face life with the feelings of doom that they cannot just snap out of. It considered a disease by the American Medical Association, and the social security administration as a disability. Even an alcoholic who no longer drinks or a drug addict who no longer uses is still an alcoholic or a drug addict and has to take measures to stay clean or sober. However it is not looked upon by society as a disease, it is viewed more as a character flaw which only contributes to its devastating effects.

I hate it when alcoholism and drug addiction is called a disease. It gives alcoholics and drug addicts yet another excuse not to try to help themselves. "I have a DISEASE!" It is NOT a DISEASE. It is begun by choice. Always. Yes, some people are more predisposed to addiction than others, but you can NOT become an alcoholic or a drug addict if you don't START doing those things to begin with, and then KEEP doing them. You learned to sniff glue because you probably saw someone else do it, and then DECIDED to try it. It's unfortunate that you started at an age where you were probably too young to really know better, but you were not born an addict.

I have reasons to believe that it is one's weakness of mind that makes them an addict...

I have a cousin who's parents were always there for her, she went to a good school, had good grades, and her parents worked and had a good financial status... She had all that she needed... and one day, she throws a fit because she did not get $100 for shoes that she did not need, so she goes with her friends and just to make her parents mad, she smokes weed... all that did to her was ruin her future... she ended up addicted and pregnant and my niece was born an addict who passed away at the age of 2... her brain did not fully develop, so she forgot to breathe one day and she died... Poor baby had no fault and ended up paying for my cousin's mistake... So I'd say it was her stupidity and weakness of mind that made her an addict...

On the other hand and still talking about addictions... My grandpa smoked two packs for cigarretes a day for 62 years of his life... his doctor told him that he should really stop smoking and adviced him to use the gum and patches... The next morning, he just said, "I'm not going to smoke anymore..." and he has not done that ever since... that was 6 years ago... He did not need medication, only the strenghth of his conviction...

I Know that all cases are different, but this is as much as I've been exposed to addictions... except for my own (which was hard to get over... I used to eat my finger nails...lol...that does not count, right?) It took a lot out of me, but I did it...

So no, in my opinion, drug addiction is not cancer, it is not a disease- although it is contagious... I see it as mental weakness... I hope I did not offend anyone, really... You just asked what my opinion was... I do apologize if anyone is offended, inclunding yourself... That was not what I intended...
