My son (14 yrs old), is a self taught fisherman and is actually pretty impressive with his knowledge. He has collected/traded many fishing poles trying to get the right one. Over the summer, he had finally got his dream pole. (it cost about $350.00) I think he would have slept with it at night if he could.

We were at the Pier, it was at night and obviously dark. He had two poles and needless to say, his dream pole got stolen.

I wanted to get him a new one although I don't plan to spend that much. (He has a 6 year old brother and he needs a "gift from Santa" for Christmas Morning.)

Inexpensive reels may not be your forte', but what would you suggest to get or look for in a pole that cost around. $75.00?
(Give or take a bit) We live in Florida, so he fishes in both fresh and saltwater.

I am a single Mom and know very little on fishing. I'm hoping one of you serious fisherman can give me some direction. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance,
Nellie

Well its great your son has gotten into fishing and I hope he gets a life long enjoyment out of it. Now I say this the up most respect don't bother buying a fishing rod for him. Reason I say this is buying equipment for a fisherman or hunter is almost impossible because everything is so dang personal. hehe we are Impossible to buy for. Now with that said he had his dream pole and knows what he likes. Go to a pro shop and ask them what is their best rod for a decient price for both salt and freshwater fishing. Get him the pole and tell him here is a starter pole that you can use to trade up to a new dream pole. He has traded once to get a dream pole chances are he can do it again just needs the help to start.

That or get him a gift certificate to a pro shop and he will be able to get exactly what he wants. Sometimes thats the best way to give a gift to a hunter or fisherman.

Hope that helps nellie!

Merry CHristmas

for a baitcaster rig I would say an ABU GARCIA 6000c on a 7 foot Shakespeare Big Water are Ugly Stick. That combo is very versitile and would run you about 75-90 dollars depending on where you get it. Plus it would be good in both salt and fresh water. If he is a spinning reel guy Shimano, Okuma and Penn are all good choices. You can find matched rigs at a few places the ones I use are as follows.
www.basspro.com
www.cabelas.com
www.catfishconnection.com

I use all three and have not had any problems with anything I have purchased from any of them. Good Luck and I hope this has helped you some.

Do you live near a Kmart or Big 5 sporting goods? Both stores carry a pre packaged surf/pier rod/reel combo for around what you are willing to spend. I was also recently in a Sports Authority store and many of their rods and reels are on clearance. I picked up an 8' rod for $9.97. Look for a rod that is at least 7' or longer so that you can cast a good distance and one big enough for you to sling out at least 3 oz of lead weight.

Tournament Choice is a good rod for both fresh & saltwater. A 7ft spinning rod runs about $40.00 andget a Sonora 4000FA spinning reel for about $40.00. I had a combo like this and caught some large fish on it till I lost it in Lower Laguna Madre 2 monyhs ago.

Red Holland has a fishing pole that is awesome. It is mainly for Fresh Water, but I have used it in the Keys.

Do you know the exact name of the dream pole? Try finding it on eBay. I have found amazing things on there at the fraction of the actual cost.

Good luck!

Get an Ugly Stik, which is made by shakespeare. It is, in my opinion, the best pole ever made. They are less than $100 also

i would suggest a redbone rod made by hurricane rods.. they cost around 80 buck give or take but they have a life time warrenty on them. so say the rod breaks in half, simply send it back to them and they send you a new one. i personally have 5 of theese and am very pleased.
