Please be curteous, I do not want to explain my past story to you. I suffered from severe clinical depression for nearly three years, and will never be fully cured. With therapy and medication over years I have gotten to the point where I can feel again. Feel pain, feel happyness, any emotion is like Heaven compared to nothingness. I became so physically sick that my body began to eat itself, I was down to 5'11 130 pounds at a point ( I was 5'11 170.)
I never want to forget the pain I felt or the strength it took to keep moving on. Are there any designs that symbolize these events?

How about the Phoenix since it rose from ashes and the sun in the background?

If there was any object or person that you could always turn to, or a phrase that you kept telling yourself over and over when things were terrible then perhaps you can get an idea in your head about something that would symbolize any of those; it may be the object/person/phrase itself.
I've gone through a lot and had similar obstacles, and during therapy, I was supposed to sort through my memories for a happy one; perhaps you can use that.
Maybe you'd gone through visualization therapy and one of those could be the embodiment of dep/suicide and you can have it caged.
Or a clasping of hands to symbolize someone helping you, so you know you aren't alone, no matter what, and there're places to go, people to see if you're going through a rough patch again.
I hope you find your way. Peace and love be with you and yours.

Congratulations. You have obviously worked very hard to overcome some major issues in your life.
I tend to agree with the Phoenix suggestion. The phoenix died and then arose from the ashes to live another life.
I have 2 tattoo's. Both of them are of winged creatures. One is a Pegasus and the other a Haida Raven. To me they signify my ability to pull myself back up when I feel I am sinking down.
Find what means something to you. Perhaps spend a bit of time researching some mythological creatures. You may find one that really inspires you and feels like it fits with you. You'll know what you want when you find it. It'll grab you and you won't get it out of your mind till it's inked on you.

all that matters is what it means to YOU you could get something very literal or you could get something that just has specific meaning to you and you alone. i guess you could get a heart with cuts and bruises and scars and a bandaid on it to remind you that you can and will heal. or you could get a remote control (like for the t.v.) to represent having control over your life again. you could get a tattoo of a monster to represent the disease that had you for so long or a monster in a cage. the possibilities are really endless. you just need to decide what means the most to you.
also i suggest finding a custom tattoo artist. research artists and find one that will suit your needs and that will give you the best tattoo possible. don't just settle for the first person you see.

Sorry I can't be more help, but with out details, it's hard to go into to many suggestions. Your tat should mean something to you. Think about what has helped you over come and all along the road. It should be something from your heart. Good luck in all you do and keep your head high.

I have had similar issues with depression because of childhood issues. I had a grim reaper - symbolizes to me where I have been - but he has a rose in his mouth - symbolizing new beginnings.. You can never forget where you have been - he is a constant reminder for me that I have been in the darkness but have made it out...

The suggestions people have below are really good. How about something that is on your foot or starts on your foot and goes up your leg to represent being at a low spot and then making your way back up to where you are now. Like a tribal vine of sorts or something like that.

Honestly, it's something to need to decide for yourself but I think a pheonix would be ideal for your situation. It embodies the death and rebirth that you experience within the cycles of battling and continuing to battle your depression. It's a symbol of undying strength to carry on no matter what comes at you, to survive, to prevail. I think it would be a lovely symbolization of what you are going through and incidently, would make one helluva beautiful piece of art. I think it would be something you would be able to draw strength from and never regret.
Best of luck to you and please let me know what you decide on.

I think a dove would be great. I would love to get a small one on the palm of my hand. My cousin has a cross on her hand. I think the dove would be good for you. Symbolizing peace and you moving on from the past. Good luck with your depression.
