My Golden Retreiver had puppies 10 days ago. She had 9 puppies, one of them died right away. Last night I was gone for a few hours and when I got home there were only 7 puppies. I looked all over the house, every possible place (even under the fridge & stove) The puppy is nowhere to be found. When I left all of the puppies seemed to be doing fine. If one of them died when I was gone would the mother have eaten the puppy. Keep in mind that the puppies are 10 days old and are a pretty decent size. Thanks for the input...

Mothers are very territorial. If the babies are just born and they are handles a lot by humans, you will leave scents on the puppies that the mother is not use to. In all animal cultures the mother will eat the pup if it feels the pup it is a threat. Also, the mother will eat a pup that is retarded, (seriously mentally retarded) I found this out when I had Gerbils.

Well its possible that the one puppy died but I doubt determining the size, she would have eaten it. Did you make sure you checked everywhere? Does she have a way of getting outside? If he is still alive, you need to find the puppy fast or it will die.

She very well may have eaten it. If one of them died naturally, the mother, would probably eat the body. My cat had a litter of kittens and and at about five weeks I found a headless kitten. The mother had blood all over her face and the other kittens were trying to drag it down the hall. Sounds gruesome and horrible, but that's probably what happened.

I have never heard of a mother dog (domestic) eating her own puppies, unless of course she is starving.
I cannot imagine what could have happened to those pups.
Are you feeding her enough.
You must remember she needs lots more food now, more than you gave her before she had the pups as she is feeding many
little hungry bellies.
I hope you find the pups, as it is possible she has hid them somewhere.
Dogs sometimes move their little several times, so look in every
'nook and cranny' in your house.
You might want to check inside her bedding also, assuming she has some blankets or whatever, for them to lay on.

not to be rude or offensive or anything, but if the puppy is still inside and not getting fed, it will die soon and you will be able to find it then - from the smell......take notice of the Mum, if it stares in a particular area, even if there is nothing there go check for the pup.
Good Luck!

If momma dog has access to outdoors, she could've buried her puppy. My friend had a dog that buried her own puppies if they died, after she saw us bury one that passed away.
